Susan is a global environmental strategist and UN-recognised legal expert (Earth Jurisprudence) with two decades of progressive leadership at the intersection of environment, human rights, economy, and governance.

She founded Living Law® in 2012 as Scotland’s first public-interest environmental law firm—a platform to unlock the power of law in addressing systemic environmental and human rights challenges.

A trusted legal advisor to leaders across business, government, and international institutions, Susan translates complex science and governance into robust and enforceable legal frameworks, credible transition pathways, and investment-grade decisions.

Her work spans boardrooms, governments, and international treaty bodies, helping decision-makers anticipate regulatory shifts, stay ahead of opportunities, navigate systemic risks, and future-proof strategies amid geopolitical and market complexity.

“Establishing Living Law® has given me the freedom to pioneer specialist approaches to legal services—for a living planet, and for present and future generations.”

Focus Areas

Susan’s legal work intersects with some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges—including climate change, water scarcity, biodiversity loss, and ecological governance. She views these not only as crises but as opportunities to unlock stronger legal frameworks that protect human and environmental rights for present and future generations—for People, for Planet, and for Prosperity.

She collaborates with global experts, policymakers, and campaigners to develop forward-thinking legal strategies that orientate to the wider public interest, while maintaining a hands-on approach at the grassroots level to deliver real and lasting change.

Susan has delivered impact across Europe and beyond, including:

  • Pioneered greenwashing litigation and ESG accountability frameworks now replicated across multiple jurisdictions globally.

  • Advanced rights-based approaches to environmental protection, including the Right to a Healthy Environment and the Rights of Nature.

  • Brokered an innovative landfill gas-to-energy public–private partnership, unlocking six-figure municipal revenues, and ~30,000 tCO₂ savings.
