Why Living Law® exists.
The environmental rule of law as a critical instrument for building a just and living world.
Living Law® was founded in 2012 on a single conviction: that law is a critical instrument for building a just and living world — and that access to it should not depend only on the size of your budget, your organisation, or the problem you face.
The firm was established to address a structural gap. Environmental and human rights law was advancing rapidly at international and EU level, but the capacity to translate those frameworks into enforceable, rights-based action at every level of governance was not keeping pace. Living Law® was built to close that distance.
Our direction has not changed. What has changed is the scale of the challenge — and the urgency of the legal response it now requires.
This conviction shapes every mandate we accept, every piece of advice we give, and every relationship we build. It is not aspirational — it is operational.
BUILT THE WAY WE ADVISE
Early to what is now standard.
The foresight we offer clients, we first applied to ourselves.
From the start, Living Law® was built deliberately: technology-enabled, structurally flexible, and free of the fixed overhead that had long constrained who expert legal counsel was available to. When we were founded in 2012 this was unusual. The profession has since moved in the same direction.
The same structural decision serves the founding conviction directly: by removing unnecessary overhead and passing the saving to clients, expert counsel reaches the boards, governments, NGOs and communities who need it — whatever the budget.
The frameworks now reshaping global markets — the EU's CSRD, SFDR, and Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, and global TNFD — came later. We have been working in this field throughout.
